POWER COUPLES

Has America fallen out of love with the loveseat? It’s been an epic breakup. For years, sofas and their mini-me loveseats were symbols of decorating and domestic bliss in living rooms across America. But there are some newer power couples on the block. Let’s take a look.

POWER COUPLES-1
The Cara sofa meets her match with two pairs of flanking chairs. From Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. At Robb & Stucky.

Today’s decorating dynamic duos are all about the marriage of equals. Sofa meets sofa. Pairs of chairs face off with sofas. Diminutive loveseat, step aside – or find someone your own size. Top designers and shelter magazines editors embrace this new equanimity. So does Robb & Stucky. It brings a fresh sense of balance – and boldness.

Perhaps Cara can be our spokeswoman. She’s a clean modern sofa silhouette from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. Note her sculptural profile, curved back and sloped arms. Cara certainly can – and does – stand alone, but we love the introduction of two sets of flanking chairs to form a convivial living space. Crosstalk and conversation is most welcome!

The larger decorating trend we see at Robb & Stucky is a lovely lesson in symmetry. The concept goes all the way back to the Greeks and the Romans, who championed harmony through proportion and balance.

Like gin and tonic, Bernhardt’s Abalone Shell tables make a perfect cocktail. At Robb & Stucky.

And symmetry needn’t stop with sofas and chairs. It’s just the beginning.

Why not, for example, let go of the cocktail table as a singular object? Some of the most innovative cocktail tables are the sum of two equal parts. Such designs are a beauty to behold, and so functional. When company’s coming, the two identical tables can separate and work the room. Cheers!

Alas, should we pity the poor loveseat? No way! Not every room can accommodate a Noah’s Ark of two-by-two sofas and chairs and so on. Smaller, intimate spaces – like so many of our great Fort Myer’s area condos – love loveseats, especially in pairs!
