LAST STAND FOR NIGHTSTANDS

Beds and nightstands have sort of a Barbie-and-Midge, Mary-and-Rhoda, Beyoncé-and-Solange relationship: one is the super star, the other is the diva’s best friend or little sister. Today, however, we are going to shine the design spotlight singularly on nightstands. In today’s interiors, nightstands do so much more than stand meekly bedside.

Rethink the nightstand with a bedside desk. Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams available at Robb & Stucky.

Nightstands are saddled with a history of servitude. Before the happy invention of indoor plumbing, bedside tables actually held chamber pots – an early version of en suite living. Nightstands are sometimes referred to as commodes. The word origin is abundantly clear.

Fast-forward a few generations to more recent times. Most of us grew up with a pair of nightstands flanking the bed, typically with matching lamps and clock radio atop, and a drawer or two beneath holding the latest John Grisham, medications and other nighttime essentials

But as our modern bedtime needs and activities have continued to evolve, so too, interior designers have responded with brilliant new bedside ideas. My hands-down favorite is the bedside desk. It’s brilliant, and a sign of the times.

Our feature photograph just might be a wake-up call for the nightstands of yore. The Omni bed from Century Furniture is unique and gorgeous. The Metro Luxe writing table in the wings more than holds its own.

Smart phones, tablets and laptops are now among our nighttime must-haves. In today’s homes, rooms rarely serve one function. Flexible workspaces are popping up everywhere, including the bedroom. Today’s beside desk offers all the functional capabilities of its predecessors, save the chamber pot!

At the end of the day, great design is always about beauty and functionality. Bedside writing tables are the “new nightstands.” They elevate the look of the entire room. Barbie, Mary and Bey, goodnight and look out!
