I think we can all agree that as we age it’s important to create a safe home that we can live in as long as possible. Renovating a home and upgrading the design for safety and aesthetics can be quite challenging. How do you create a space that is safe, but looks beautiful? Many people are afraid of compromising style for safety, and although that is a valid concern, I’m here to say you don’t have to compromise a thing! My goal is to create a home that is comfortable and gorgeous. How do I go about this? You ask. Where do I start? Renovating an entire home can take some time, so let’s start with the first room at the top of our priority list: the bathroom.

A slip and fall in the bathroom can cause serious injuries that can last a lifetime and because the bathroom is such a wet area it can be the most hazardous. Take a look at your shower floor. If you don’t have a tiled surface with plenty of grout lines, you need to start here. Install non-skid tile on the larger portion of your bathroom and select a smaller pattern in the shower with a large number of grout lines. Hello mosaic tile! This creates traction, beauty and a safe surface.

Next up, eliminate that shower dam! A walk-in/roll-in shower is of the utmost importance, not only because it’s safer, but it’s more visually appealing. Having an open shower is a modern upgrade that adds value and elegance to your home. Say goodbye to stepping over that dam and walk and roll into a safer, more comfortable shower.

Grab bars. No one likes grab bars. They are in no way easy on the eyes and they make us feel old just looking at them. Thankfully, there are some options that take grab bars to a whole new, sophisticated level. Today’s bars are multi-purpose and highly functional. They can double as a soap holder in the shower and a toilet paper holder near the toilet. Now that’s double duty!

If you have to dodge a sprinkling when you turn your shower on it might be time to move your on/off shower control. Universal design calls for the thermostatic control valve to be located on the shower’s entry wall opposite the shower head. This makes toe dipping and temperature testing so much easier.

Lastly, hand-held shower heads are all the rage. Be a true trendsetter and do away with your standard rain head and upgrade to a hand-held. Not only is it easier to rinse off, but it works in tandem with a shower chair. Bonus, cleaning your shower walls will be a breeze!

These are easy fixes to some potentially dangerous issues. If you follow these guidelines, you’ll be enjoying a safer more beautiful bathroom in no time. As always, I’m only a phone call away and ready to answer all of your Aging in Place questions.
