Lighting the Way for Seniors

Light is one of the most important elements in designing a home, whether you’re controlling the daylight or setting the mood at night. This importance doubles when designing a home for a couple who plan on living in that space as they age. As we grow older, lighting becomes a huge factor in safety and comfort. Adding a few strategically placed LEDs can make a world of difference in any space.

First things first, let’s take a look at the exterior of your home. Getting from your car to the front door can be challenging for anyone at night. A trail of solar lamps placed at ground level can illuminate your path, making your trek from driveway to door so much easier. Remember to install a decorative ceiling mounted fixture at the front door. Not only does it welcome guests, but it makes finding your keys a breeze.

Navigating a walkway has never been easier.

A well lit kitchen is an absolute must. A downlight placed above the sink enhances visibility. Under cabinet LEDs aid in food prep – we don’t want any nicked fingers! Dimmable ceiling downlights control the level of illumination and pendants placed over the center island wash the kitchen in light. Get rid of those old fluorescent tubes, put a string of LEDs in your moulding and Voila!...reflected light from the ceiling. Dim those and you have a soothing kitchen nightlight.

Keep trips and falls at bay and light your stairway. A simple row of tiny LEDs placed under the handrail illuminates the stairs. Light up the tread of the stairs and you have a map to your second floor. What’s even better? Both of these options operate on motion sensors.

Speaking of motion sensors, lighting the hallway with downlights or sconces saves energy. The lights turn on as you approach the area and turn off as you exit…magic.

Motion sensors are a requirement in new or remodeled bathrooms. Some new toilets have a motion sensor light behind the seat, creating a blue nightlight that insures your safety. And if you’re a fan of nifty gadgets, there is also the Illumalight, a small LED that clips on to a toilet.

These are just some of the ways lighting makes your home safer as you age. If you need help, just give me a call. I’m always here to help answer any of your Aging in Place questions.
