Hanging Wall Art 101
May 1, 2013There’s just one problem. Approaching a pristine wall with hammer and nails can be daunting! No worries. Robb & Stucky is here to help. In fact, our editor was a fly on the wall during a recent design seminar on this very topic hosted by Jim Brandt. Here’s a recap for those who missed it:
Scale Rules
Keep things in proportion. Be attuned to the space. For example, if you are hanging a piece of art above a nightstand, Jim Brandt advises that the width of the framed picture be no greater than that of the nightstand. This creates balance and harmony.
What Is Art?
When we talk about wall art, pictures are the immediate go-to. Jim Brandt encourages us to think outside the box. Jim hung a beautiful rug on a great room wall in a recent installation. This added texture, nuance and color. And, as a bonus, the rug also helped absorb sound.
Group Think
A dramatic piece of art can stand alone. But, thoughtfully selected pieces can also be assembled to create beautiful harmony. Jim Brandt delighted a client recently when he actually framed out a large molded box on a wall and clustered artwork within the space. So beautiful. So effective. So dramatic.
New Dimensions
As you’re clustering pictures, you may have occasion to mix large pieces with smaller ones. To be sure the larger pieces don’t swallow up the smaller ones, Jim Brandt suggests backing the smaller ones with an additional piece of wood so they have pleasing depth and dimension in the overall space.
Go Nail-less
Finally, Jim Brandt advises that you may consider throwing away the nails. Don’t be afraid to prop pictures up against the wall. And, feel free to layer away. Of course, this gives you ultimate flexibility. It’s so easy to move things around and experiment with new arrangements. Enjoy!
